Common Denture Problems and How To Treat Them

Denture issues

Dentures can be an excellent solution for those who have experienced tooth loss, as they can restore your ability to chew and speak properly. However, like with any dental appliance, these devices can have problems. Throughout this article, we’ll explore some of the most common denture problems people experience and provide ways to treat them.

Some Common Denture Problems and How To Treat Them

Dentures, while considered a highly useful tool for tooth replacement, come with their flaws. Many issues can emerge if they are not adequately cared for or properly fitted. These are some common concerns that need to be addressed right away if you wear dentures:

Sore Spots: Sore spots throughout your mouth are a commonly reported problem with dentures, especially during the first few weeks after getting them. These sore spots occur when the dentures rub against the gums and other areas of the mouth. To try and treat these sore spots, here’s what we recommend:

  • Apply some dental adhesive to the affected area to help keep the dentures in place.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
  • See your dentist if the sore spots do not improve after a few days.

Loose Dentures: Dentures can become loose over time due to gum and bone structure changes. Loose dentures can be uncomfortable, cause difficulties with chewing and speaking, and even contribute to sores. Here are some ways we recommend treating this issue:

  • Apply dental `adhesive to help hold the dentures in place.
  • See your dentist to have the dentures adjusted or relined.
  • Consider implant-supported dentures for a more secure fit.

Gum Irritation: Gum irritation can occur while wearing dentures. This irritation can be caused by food particles getting trapped under the dentures or when the dentures are ill-fitted. Solutions we recommend:

  • Remove the dentures and rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
  • Brush your gums gently with a soft-bristled brush.
  • See your dentist if the irritation persists.

Difficulty Eating and Speaking: Dentures can also make it difficult to eat and speak, especially if they are brand new or need to fit correctly. Some ways we recommend correcting this problem include:

  • Start with soft foods and work your way up to harder foods.
  • Practice speaking slowly and enunciating your words.
  • See your dentist to have the dentures adjusted or replaced if necessary.

Bad Breath: Wearing dentures over time can also contribute to bad breath, especially if they aren’t cleaned properly. Here are some ways we recommend treating bad breath:

  • Remove the dentures and clean them thoroughly with a denture cleaner.
  • Brush your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft brush.
  • Rinse your mouth with mouthwash or warm salt water.
